Liebster Award Nomination

Huw from Financially Free by Forty nominated me for the Liebster Award, which is a way to spread the word about other blogs and get to know a little more about them through questions that might not normally be covered. Huw was one of the first friends I made upon starting my blog in March.  He’s made tremendous progress this year in his quest for financial independence so be sure to check in with him and say hello if you haven’t already.  Thank you for thinking of me Huw!

Huw asks the following:

“What is the best financial advice you could pass on to someone?”

It’s never too late to start saving.  I went through a rough patch serving tables and living paycheck to paycheck until I was 27 years old.  I honestly thought I’d never have more than a few grand to my name and even that would have been a ton of money to me.  I found myself often depressed and thinking of where my life was compared to all the potential I once thought I had.  When I got my first post production job on a television show, my income finally started to increase little by little; however, I’d never really had money before and I managed my expenses very poorly.  It took into my 30’s for me to finally start saving aggressively.  Now I’m actively managing my own portfolio. It’s the best thing I’ve done for me this far into my life.  I can see a future from here, and I’m working so I never have to live paycheck to paycheck again.

“What’s your favourite movie of all time?”

Fellowship of the Ring.  Honorable mention: Gattaca.

“What is the best type of investment in your opinion and why?”

An investment in yourself.  We only get one life and it goes by so much faster than we realize.  Spread love and kindness, take care of your body and your environment, and always seek for new knowledge and experiences.

“Outside of finance, what is your biggest passion in life?”

Storytelling.  I’m lucky because I get to practice my passion in my everyday career.  In editing I’m arranging images and sounds into a fluid moving story with a beginning middle and end.  I love more than just the editing and aspire to share stories as a filmmaker.  Away from work I’m notorious for always bringing my phone out and recording videos.  The footage I capture serve as visual memories.  Ever want a moment to last forever?  Record it.  You can do powerful things even with just a phone.  I visited my family in the Midwest last winter during my Mother’s birthday and Christmas.   I made a visual memory of my own life’s story that I enjoy watching every time I miss them while I’m living here in Los Angeles.  You can watch my video below, and I encourage everyone to start recording more things with your camera and phone and save it for the future!  One day you’ll look back and be really happy you saved those memories.

“What quote or saying do you find most inspiring?”

“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.”  – Kurt Vonnegut.

The final part of the Liebster award allows me to nominate other blogs and if they’ll accept, I nominate the following:

Scott @ Two Investing:  About a year ago I stumbled upon some google templates for tracking my investments.  Soon after starting my blog, I got a comment from Scott. When I explored his site, I realized he was the one who created all the powerful spreadsheets I had been using.  Scott’s portfolio recently cracked the 100k mark.  Be sure to stop by and take a look around.

Sam @ ReddySetGo:  I just learned about Sam today when he commented on my blog for the first time.  He is sharing his thoughts on the market through videos and of course I support that medium.  Sam’s portfolio is just starting out as he moves into his dividend growth journey.   My portfolio was the same size just last December.  He’s getting a start much earlier than I did and I wish him the best of luck.

Here are the questions I hope Scott and Sam will answer:

What is your most prized possession?

Which company would you want as  your largest holding five years from now?

What is something you’ve never done before but would like to?

If you had to start a business, what would it be?

Who is your Investing idol?

Have a great finish to the week everyone and thanks for reading.

      Dividend Mongrel,

Thanks for your continued support and kindness, it means a lot. I’m so happy to be in a community of like minded individuals sharing their ideas and progress; and thanks for following along in mine. I’m glad you liked the video. Even if one doesn’t know how to edit, raw footage is a great way to look back years from now and help one remember a lifetime of stories.

      All my best,
      Ryan

    Ryan,

Congrats on the nomination! I think one of the coolest aspects about this community is learning about others with different perspectives, life experiences, and backgrounds…all coming together for similar aspirations. Awesome!

You’ve really turned the tables…going from waiting them to one day being able to buy the restaurant you used to work for. Keep up the great work, my friend.

    Best wishes!

Thank you for the nice words, Jason. I’m usually just posting about my recent buys and monthly updates, but this was a fun chance to put a more personal touch to a post. I couldn’t have said it better, it’s a very powerful common bond among us bloggers/readers who come from all over the globe and I’m so happy I’m no longer lurking in the shadows because the interaction has pushed me much further than I might have gone on my own. Haha, I could own a restaurant one day… But I agree with what you’ve said in the past about how it’s too much hands on work, passive dividend income is so much better. Plus, I won’t smell like food all the time, hehe. What I might love to do eventually is invest in some epic video and audio gear and possibly start a production company. But that’s likely when I’m much closer to FI, for now, solid story work and production quality can make my entry level gear look good enough.

Always a pleasure to hear from you,
      Ryan

You guys are doing great work over there and I’m really enjoying following along!

    Hey Ryan,

Thank you for the kind words at the top! I think you did a smashing job with this post and accepting the award. It backs up why you got the nomination.

You answered the questions very well. I particularly like the ‘Investment in yourself’ and your ‘storytelling passion’.

The video you made was sweet. You’re clearly very good at what you do. I bet your family are so grateful for you making that. I feel inspired to film more myself now.

You wrapped it up with a great set of questions for the your nominees too. I’ll check out the Blog’s and eagerly wait for their responses.

    Good work my friend!

      Huw,

I was glad you presented me this chance to post about something completely different and a little personal, thanks again. I always like to relate to the people I’m reading and so far on my young blog, I often get too caught up on just stocks, dividends, and charts! I’m happy you liked the answers because I happened to like your questions just as much 🙂 Run with that inspiration! Record some videos or take some pictures because both are real life time machines that will freeze a moment forever and you’ll want to show your grand kids one day that you were a young pup once yourself! Have a great weekend!

      Best,
      Ryan

      Sam,

I hadn’t heard of the award either, hehe. I’m pretty new to blogging and even reading blogs, but becoming active has helped my financial goals tremendously so far. It’s also been great forming a bond with other like minded people in the community.

Thanks for commenting on the video and pester me any time 🙂 I’ll be looking forward to your answers!

      Best,
      Ryan
