Liebster Award Nomination
Huw from Financially Free by Forty nominated me for the Liebster Award, which is a way to spread the word about other blogs and get to know a little more about them through questions that might not normally be covered. Huw was one of the first friends I made upon starting my blog in March. He’s made tremendous progress this year in his quest for financial independence so be sure to check in with him and say hello if you haven’t already. Thank you for thinking of me Huw!
Huw asks the following:
“What is the best financial advice you could pass on to someone?”
It’s never too late to start saving. I went through a rough patch serving tables and living paycheck to paycheck until I was 27 years old. I honestly thought I’d never have more than a few grand to my name and even that would have been a ton of money to me. I found myself often depressed and thinking of where my life was compared to all the potential I once thought I had. When I got my first post production job on a television show, my income finally started to increase little by little; however, I’d never really had money before and I managed my expenses very poorly. It took into my 30’s for me to finally start saving aggressively. Now I’m actively managing my own portfolio. It’s the best thing I’ve done for me this far into my life. I can see a future from here, and I’m working so I never have to live paycheck to paycheck again.
“What’s your favourite movie of all time?”
Fellowship of the Ring. Honorable mention: Gattaca.
“What is the best type of investment in your opinion and why?”
An investment in yourself. We only get one life and it goes by so much faster than we realize. Spread love and kindness, take care of your body and your environment, and always seek for new knowledge and experiences.
“Outside of finance, what is your biggest passion in life?”
Storytelling. I’m lucky because I get to practice my passion in my everyday career. In editing I’m arranging images and sounds into a fluid moving story with a beginning middle and end. I love more than just the editing and aspire to share stories as a filmmaker. Away from work I’m notorious for always bringing my phone out and recording videos. The footage I capture serve as visual memories. Ever want a moment to last forever? Record it. You can do powerful things even with just a phone. I visited my family in the Midwest last winter during my Mother’s birthday and Christmas. I made a visual memory of my own life’s story that I enjoy watching every time I miss them while I’m living here in Los Angeles. You can watch my video below, and I encourage everyone to start recording more things with your camera and phone and save it for the future! One day you’ll look back and be really happy you saved those memories.
“What quote or saying do you find most inspiring?”
“We have to continually be jumping off cliffs and developing our wings on the way down.” – Kurt Vonnegut.
The final part of the Liebster award allows me to nominate other blogs and if they’ll accept, I nominate the following:
Scott @ Two Investing: About a year ago I stumbled upon some google templates for tracking my investments. Soon after starting my blog, I got a comment from Scott. When I explored his site, I realized he was the one who created all the powerful spreadsheets I had been using. Scott’s portfolio recently cracked the 100k mark. Be sure to stop by and take a look around.
Sam @ ReddySetGo: I just learned about Sam today when he commented on my blog for the first time. He is sharing his thoughts on the market through videos and of course I support that medium. Sam’s portfolio is just starting out as he moves into his dividend growth journey. My portfolio was the same size just last December. He’s getting a start much earlier than I did and I wish him the best of luck.
Here are the questions I hope Scott and Sam will answer:
What is your most prized possession?
Which company would you want as your largest holding five years from now?
What is something you’ve never done before but would like to?
If you had to start a business, what would it be?
Who is your Investing idol?
Have a great finish to the week everyone and thanks for reading.
