Dividend Update: August 2015

What a fun ride this choppy market has been.  Stock prices have been falling to lows not seen in years but my dividend payouts keep rolling in and growing stronger.  I’m automatically reinvesting those dividends while continuing to contribute fresh capital into businesses that have histories of raising their dividends each year.  One day I hope to live off of this stable and reliable dividend income.

In August I received dividends from 8 of my 26 holdings totaling $180.76.   They all got reinvested as I locked in an additional $8.58 in forward annual dividend income.  At the end of the month, my 12-month forward dividend income stood at $2,400.21 or an average of $200.02 each month.  Here’s a snapshot of my payout activity:2015_AUGUST_D22

August’s total dividends of $180.76 grew 59.06% over last quarter’s $113.64 in May.  Going back further, that increase was 121.11% over last year’s $81.75.    Here’s my updated dividend payouts chart:2015_AUGUST_DPAt the start this year I set out to receive $2,050 in dividend income.  After seven months, I’ve crossed four figure dividend income for the first time in a single year by earning $1,074.72 through August so far.  Here’s an update of my 2015 dividends received goal:2015_AUGUST_DR2Two businesses I own announced dividend raises during the month.  The first from Bank Of Nova Scotia was a 2.94% increase in Canadian dollars, however due to current exchange rates I left it off the chart below which shows the other raise I received over the month from Altria (MO).2015_AUGUST_DRRLast year in August, I had only received $448.76 in total lifetime dividends.  One year later, that number increased 325.41% to a new total of $1,909.06.  Here’s an updated chart:2015_AUGUST_LDI’ve managed to make two purchases in September so far which I’ll be posting about soon and I wish I could make more with all the bargains out there.  I have a few unpaid weeks off for the wedding and honeymoon next month so cash might be a little tight as I put the finishing touches on our budget. I’m really hoping to find some room to buy one more holding though and am leaning toward adding more BP, KMI, UTX, or initiating a position in PX.  I’m very fickle though and those choices may change in an instant with all the other businesses up for grabs.  Happy hunting my fellow investors.

How is your September so far?  Have you been buying the dip?

Another step in the right direction! I’m a bit further on my journey capturing $560 this month and forecasted $510 next month, it’s amazing how fast it starts to just snowball. Excited to see where we both are in a few years!

It’s always great to hear from people who are having success with the strategy, Karl. I can’t wait to get to where you are, so much flexibility will open up to me at that point. Let’s keep at it, and thanks for the nice comment!

    Ryan,

Great stuff there. Another big step in the right direction, which is exactly where you want to be. 🙂

Hope you take plenty of pictures on the honeymoon. What a nice preview of what awaits you down the road.

    Keep it up!

    Best regards.

P.S. I think the top chart’s bottom number is off.

It’s amazing watching the strategy work so well, I already have a lot more flexibility in my income. It’s a nice feeling not completely relying on a paycheck from the job and it’ll only get better as you’re proving. I’ll be sure to take plenty of video and pictures, we’re so excited. Hope all is well my East coast friend!

Thanks for the heads up on the chart, glad to see someone actually reads those numbers hehe! Got the right one up now.

Great job for a “quiet” August month. Not too many names in common for the month between our portfolios but you do bring ETN to my mind. It really looks like a solid industrial play that’s not that popular among the DGI bloggers. I mentioned that I’ll be adding that to my watch list. Great progress and graph. Must be fun to count those dividends.

Thank you much, Keith. I’ll be curious to see if you pull the trigger on ETN, I’ve seen it show up a decent bit in the community lately and believe it’s one of the better bargains in the industrial space. I wish I had been buying stocks back when you started investing in all those solid consumer names, you have such an enviable core portfolio! I’d love to purchase them if they ever fall back to earth, maybe this latest market noise will allow it. Thanks for stopping by, always great to hear from you 🙂
